FIBER ON MY PATH ~ Croatia

How are sailing ships related to fiber art?

They do have canvas sails, rope rigging, and flags made of fabric. Dubrovnik, Croatia was a nautical trading powerhouse as early as the 1200’s, known then as Ragusa, the Pearl of the Adriatic. Their ship design, the Karaka, was the first to carry fresh water to avoid stops in enemy ports. Strong diplomatic skills with Venice and the Ottoman Turks created a peaceful and wealthy homeland.

The XEBEC of the 18th Century
This style roamed the Mediterranean Sea from the 15th to 19th century. Favored by pirates for quick plunder and quicker get-aways.

PETKA, a Brig-Schooner
She was a freighter, smallest in her fleet, with a tonnage of 235 tons. That figure gives an idea of why trade was lucrative.

A mystery ship to this blogger, no label was shown, but she was just too beautiful to leave out.
