Farming styles are dictated by the physical land and the demand on that land. There is little arable land in China. Rice terraces were established centuries ago. In North America land is plentiful. Huge fields produce crops to feed the world. In European fields have been subdivided into small plots that remind us of patchwork.

The Louisiana Purchase added vast lands to the United States, west of the Mississippi River, even when huge segments of land beyond the eastern seaboard had not yet been surveyed. The Jeffersonian Grid of the United States subdivided the land in order to settle and develop communities and farms.

When sections designated by the Jeffersonian Grid where in areas that flooded, were too rocky or for whatever reason could not be settled, Americans devised innovative ways to earn a living. Milling operations, ferry boats and fishing were only a very few businesses developed to use their land to support themselves.
