The Flower Nook Floral & Artisan Gallery of Salina, Kansas issued a challenge to the members of MOFA to transform fresh/dried magnolia leaves into a work of art.
In working with this media, there is a fine balance between fragility and strength when it comes to combining crochet or stitching techniques to reconfigure an ordinary leaf into a piece of incredible craftsmanship. But in the wider context of emerging from the brutal bitterness of 2020, leaf art is the perfect form to show the tenderness and tension in human connections, the transient yet enduring beauty of nature that can be found in the smallest detail, and the vulnerability and resilience of nature as a whole or the stories of human survival. Below are some of the pieces that were created to meet the challenge.
